Material used throughout our collections is selected with attention to energy and performance.
From wax composition and fragrance structure to wick pairing, vessels, and finishing materials, each component contributes to how a product burns, diffuses, settles into a space, and aligns.
At Alchemist + Co., formulation is approached as both material study and environmental design. The goal is not simply to create fragrance, but to create rituals that integrate naturally into routine, and the emotional architecture of the everyday.

Burn Performance
Why Coconut Apricot Wax
Plant-based wax blend
Smooth and even burn performance
Strong yet balanced scent diffusion
Lower visible soot production
Renewable material composition
Longer, slower burn compared to many traditional wax blends
Because of the natural composition of coconut apricot wax, slight variations may occur between pours. Surface texture changes, minor frosting, or subtle shifts in appearance are normal and do not affect the quality or performance of the candle.
We view these variations as part of the material integrity of small-batch production rather than something to artificially eliminate.
For best performance, allow the melt pool to reach the edges of the vessel during the initial burn. This helps support a more even burn throughout the life of the candle and minimizes tunneling over time.
We recommend trimming the wick to approximately 1/4 inch before each burn and limiting burn sessions to 2–4 hours at a time.
Wick Structure
Every candle is finished with a 100% lead-free cotton wick selected to support a cleaner, slower, and more consistent burn experience.
Wick structure plays a significant role in how fragrance diffuses throughout a space, how evenly wax melts across the vessel, and how the atmosphere of a candle develops over time. Each wick is paired intentionally to its vessel size and wax composition to support balanced performance throughout the life of the burn.
Like all natural fiber materials, slight variations in flame height and burn behavior may occur depending on environmental conditions, airflow, room temperature, and burn duration. These subtle variations are considered part of the natural character of small-batch candle production rather than defects in performance.
Fragrance Formulation
Fragrance Standards
Understanding Restricted Materials
Essential Oils
California Prop 65
Fragrance is approached as both atmosphere and structure. Every blend is developed to shape the sensory experience of a space through layered composition, diffusion, pacing, and emotional association over time.
At Alchemist + Co., formulation is not treated as trend-driven “clean fragrance” marketing. Instead, we focus on creating compositions that balance performance, material integrity, and modern formulation standards while avoiding unnecessarily harsh or heavily restricted materials where possible.
Each fragrance is selected not only for how it smells, but for how it settles into a room, evolves throughout a burn, and interacts with memory, routine, and environmental presence.
Fragrance Standards
Our fragrance compositions are formulated without:
phthalates
parabens
carcinogens
acute toxins
organ toxins
materials classified within restricted CMR categories
We also avoid ingredients currently outlined under California Proposition 65 wherever possible within modern fragrance formulation standards.
Rather than approaching formulation through fear-based marketing, we focus on thoughtful material selection, transparency, and long-term sensory experience.
Every fragrance is evaluated for both atmospheric performance and overall formulation integrity before entering production.
Modern fragrance formulation involves evaluating both performance and safety across hundreds of aromatic compounds and material categories.
Certain materials may be classified or monitored under categories relating to:
carcinogenicity
reproductive toxicity|
organ toxicity
acute toxicity
environmental impact
CMR stands for:
Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, or Reproductive Toxicant.
These classifications are used globally within formulation and regulatory industries to identify materials requiring additional evaluation, restriction, or disclosure.
At Alchemist + Co., we work to avoid unnecessarily aggressive or highly restricted materials where possible while maintaining the depth, complexity, and atmospheric character of each fragrance composition.
Our approach prioritizes informed formulation standards rather than excessive “free-from” marketing language.
Fragrance oils are infused with essential oils chosen for aromatic depth, sensory layering, and overall atmospheric composition.
We view essential oils as supporting elements within a broader fragrance architecture rather than standalone wellness claims.
Their role within formulation is to contribute texture, dimensionality, familiarity, and emotional association within the overall sensory experience of a scent.
Because essential oils are naturally derived materials, slight variation between harvests or batches may occur over time.
California Proposition 65 is a regulatory labeling framework requiring disclosure of specific substances identified by the State of California as potentially linked to cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm above established exposure thresholds.
These requirements often apply broadly across industries and do not necessarily indicate that a product is unsafe when used as intended.
At Alchemist + Co., we carefully review fragrance materials and work to avoid listed substances wherever reasonably possible while maintaining formulation performance and product integrity.
Our approach emphasizes thoughtful material selection, modern safety standards, and responsible formulation practices rather than unnecessary alarm-based messaging.

Vessel + Material
Each collection is housed in recycled amber glass selected for both sustainability and longevity. The darker vessel softens light within a space while helping preserve the integrity of fragrance materials over time.
Amber glass is not only for chosen for its visual character, but for the way it integrates naturally into interior environments without overwhelming them. The vessels are designed to feel grounded, functional, and enduring long after the candle itself has finished burning.
Each candle is finished with a reusable metal lid intended to help protect the wax surface between burns while contributing to the overall material structure of the piece.
Slight variation, air bubbles, or natural inconsistencies within recycled glass may occur and are considered part of the material character of the vessel rather than defects.
Botanicals + Crystals
Select ritual collections incorporate wild harvested botanicals and ethically sourced stones chosen for their energetic properties, alignment, and relationship to scent.
Because each candle is poured and finished by hand, slight variation between botanicals, crystals, and surface composition is considered part of the material character of small-batch production.
